Professor Rumana Riffat's research interests are in wastewater treatment, specifically anaerobic treatment of wastewater and biosolids, nutrient removal, and wastewater reuse. She and her research group have conducted extensive research on processes to further reduce pathogens, such as dual digestion, temperature phased digestion, and various pretreatment options. Her nutrient removal research has focused on determination of kinetics, and evaluation of various external carbon sources for denitrification.
Researchers
Adrian Romero-Flores, PhD
Post Doctoral Scientist Adrian joined the team in August 2016 after obtaining his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of Maryland, College Park. His research interests include increasing the understanding of anaerobic digestion aimed for intensification in energy recovery from sludge, as well as minimizing biosolids production. Additionally, he’s interested in the optimization of resource recovery processes in order to minimize emission of odorous compounds. Find out more about Adrian at www.linkedin.com/in/aromerof. |
Graduate Students
Baoqiang Li
PhD Student Baoqiang Li received his MS degree in Environmental Engineering from George Washington University in 2015. His research interests are in wastewater treatment and reuse of biosolids. Baoqiang has conducted research on Temperature Phased Anaerobic Digestion. Now he is working on intensification of hydrolysis in anaerobic digestion. |
Mahmudul Hasan
PhD Student Mahmudul received his MS degree from George Washington University in 2017. His research interests are on the optimization of sludge dewatering and its full scale application in the wastewater treatment plant. He has investigated the mechanisms that impact the sludge dewatering process, with the purpose of minimizing cost along with increasing efficiency of dewatering. Mahmudul received his BS degree in civil engineering, and MS degree in civil (environmental) engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. |
